HIGHLY COMMENDED
798 Montepulciano Barrique ‘Bucaro’ Cantine Volpi, £9.99
A really gutsy Malbec with a gorgeously dark-fruited nose. Rich and fruity, (bitter chocolate, blackcurrant and raisins), gentle tannins and reassuring sweetness on the finish.
Côte de Beaune La Combe d’Eve (by special order), £24.99Vinho Regional Alentejano, Casa de Mouraz (by special order), £8.99
We are delighted to win this award again – most of all as an acknowledgement of the dedication of Gustavo Caligiore and his team producing artisan wines near Mendoza, in the shadow of the Andes. Their Malbec 2009 is made with grapes grown on 80 year old vines.
In the winery, a minimalist (indigenous yeasts, no additives etc) and organic winemaking approach is employed.
“Our main goal is get a tiny piece of Mendoza though the grape and into every single bottle” says Gustavo. “We aim to make highly concentrated wines, where the personality of the grapes and the land are given full expression. The company philosophy is ‘The soul of the land made into wine’. The whole team is extremely proud to win this prize because it means that our hard work over many years has been recognized. At the same time it’s also a tribute to my mum Norma who was as committed and a very enthusiastic woman promoting organic farming in Mendoza. With her strong spirit she led each of us at Caligiore through some difficult times.”
